Comment from caitlin curtis:

We are ultimately lonely beings. We lack the means to properly express ourselves, and others lack the ability to apprehend our thoughts or identities. Hence we will toil over finding the right outfit, hairstyle and - where possible - body; we are desperate to convey to others our profound and expansive minds through one complete, finite image. It's a futile but endearing task. And, of course, the reverse it true. Other people can only be known to us as outfits, faces and instances of behaviour; in seeing them this way, we think of them in terms of fixed persons, thus widening the gap between our perception of ourselves and of others. It's isolating; other people seem so complete compared to our constantly flittering mentality. However, other minds are most likely very similar to ours, filled with just as many anxieties and uncertainties as our own. If we can realise the actual intensity and complexity of other minds, perhaps we may become more forgiving of each other. We'll appreciate that people will not behave as we expect them to and that they're equally tormented and confused. We can never know others, nor they us, but we can work to reduce the idea of distinction that separates us all.

"Human nature has taught us to capture things that are beautiful and freeze them within a temporal framework. However, this has distorted the concept of self-love, for it suggests that one should always be returning back to a certain ideal, or striving forwards to the next. Instead, it should be remembered that the female body is always in a state of transition; a woman will never again be the same as she was in the last moment just as she will never know how she is going to be in the next, and this is what gives the female body such an exciting and dynamic complexity. It is the times most transient, most fleeting, and most difficult to let go of that evoke the greatest beauty." I'm not usually one for magazines but @lyra.magazine is on point. Philosophy, psychology and political commentary, plus the aesthetic is shit hot. 11/10 would recommend.

You will seek consolation in others and they won't always provide it; it's impossible for people to instinctively intuit what you are feeling or what you need. I'm not saying you should never confide in other people: you should make an effort to express your feelings as well you can to those you trust. But you should also bear in mind that if they don't respond in the way you need, it's not because they don't care or because you aren't worthy of love. It's because they too are caught up in anxiety and pressure, even if they appear not to be. People often need to be heard before they are happy to listen.

We are alienated by the outwardly together appearance of others, forgetting that they too have insecurities and failures and parts they'd rather not share for fear of being outcast. We are all imperfect and that is okay. It's a comfort to remind yourself that you aren't the only one, that everybody is slightly flawed. It's not a criticism of people, it's a liberation and a reminder that you are enough.

Whatever I am searching for, I am that. When you realise that all you need to be happy is yourself, you can love others not for what they give you but for their whole selves. All love is (in one sense of the word) is a desire to possess an attribute or characteristic of the beloved object be it a person or piece of art or whatever. We love the beautiful because we want beauty, we love the wise because we want wisdom and we love the kind because we want to be kinder. We already have these qualities within us but until we find them we will choke the objects of our love with aversion, need and obsession. It is only when we discover we hold everything we need for happiness (not synonymous with pleasure) that we can lose harmful attachment and cherish things in their true light. This way we can love compassionately, without fear or neediness. (This was inspired by the yogi saying 'Aham Bramhasmi' and the words of Socrates in the symposium; there is a perceived clash between western and eastern philosophy which I believe is bullshit because you can combine the two to realise things like this)
