“I really began enjoying the outdoors when I started adventure racing. Adventure racing combines mountain biking, kayaking and hiking mountains for hours and/or days on end. I traveled to such places as Greenland, Iceland, Brazil, Patagonia, Mexico, Alaska, Costa Rica and Spain to enjoy everything their environments had to offer. Getting such a close look at the geography, topography and climate of the regions gave me a unique view of the places I visited and made me excited to learn more. Having walked on glaciers in Greenland and Alaska has made me more aware of climate change and hopeful for their futures. Mountain biking through groves of olive trees in Spain made me curios to try the varieties of olives and picking blueberries in Alaska made me understand the high cost of purchasing them in the store. I think first hand knowledge of the outdoors opens a person's mind to the beauty, ruggedness and need for care of the Earth's environment.” - Bernice Pierson @bernicepierson | Aide | Hike SLO

“A yoga class is a great way to start the day no matter what, but practicing outside, especially in a peaceful setting like a vineyard, always makes it that much better. I believe that wine, like any plant or plant-based product, connects us to the land when we consume it. I also believe that practicing yoga outside generates a feeling of union with the earth underneath you (and usually calls for a little extra balance). Despite being really fun, the combination of yoga and wine definitely leaves me feeling a little more “rooted down,” and just that much more engaged with the world around me.” - Maggie Andrews @maggieandrewz | Aide | Vineyard Vinyasa

“Surfing is incredible. It engages all aspects of a person in such a way no other activity can do. It clears your mind, strengthens your body, and refreshes your soul. There is no other feeling like walking up the beach, exhausted, with ocean water in your hair, salt on your lips, and sand in between your toes after a surf. It is one of those things that, to the observer, seems both impossible and effortless at the same time, but to the surfer, is neither. Learning how to surf is intimidating. How does one stand up on a moving wall of water? While it is challenging, it is one of those things you never regret doing. You can brag about it to your family, post about it to your friends, but most of all it is something you yourself can be proud of accomplishing. Take a lesson, learn the basics, attempt to stand up, fall, and try again. You’ll find out for yourself what the big fuss is about!” - Bradley Zimmer @bradleyzimm | Aide | Learn to Surf | Pismo Beach, CA

“I love how games act as a great icebreaker. Someone could go from stranger to friend in a matter of a few minutes if I’m playing games with them. I have a bunch of roles with Rampshot ( @rampshot). I run the social media, event manager, and just grind on the daily to make it the next great outdoor game. Not too many people know about Rampshot...yet. But everyone who plays loves it and I’m confident it’ll be played worldwide in the future!” - Ian Golembeski @iangolembeski | Aide | Beach Game Day | Avila Beach, CA

KJ (short for Kristen Joy) started her yoga practice while pregnant with her 1st daughter in 2002. She practiced a bit in her 3rd pregnancy in 2007, but it was not until she tore her ACL and meniscus twice on the same knee she knew yoga was needed to rehabilitate from 2 surgeries. As a mom to 3 daughters and owner of an organic aloe vera skin care franchise she is passionate about health and wellness in all aspects of her life. KJ completed her 200 hour YTT through Yoga Mazé at SLO Yoga Center under the instruction of Rocky Heron. She believes it does not matter how old you are, what body type you are, or how active you are; anyone can practice yoga. She believes yoga is truly a journey and a lifelong practice. KJ will always share the true yoga happens off the mat when you take your practice into everyday life situations. She can not wait to have you in one of your classes! - 👆🏼Click the link in our bio to download the Adventure Aide app and sign up for a yoga class with live music led by KJ @the.rooted.yogi

"Sandboarding is a combination of surfing, snow and skateboarding. And then again, it's different, there are no crowds, there is no road rash and there are no lift lines (there are no lifts). Nobody is quite sure when and how sandboarding began, though I've heard stories of people in the fifties riding car hoods down the dunes in California, USA and Brazilians inventing a basic form of sandboarding in the early forties. - I made my first sandboard in my high school wood shop class in 1973, and rode it every day for the following two weeks. in 1979 my skateboard sponsor Flite Skateboards sent some snowboards to try out and after a weeklong trip to Tahoe I was convinced these boards that worked so well in the snow could be put to use on the sand as well. - In short order Gary and I discovered that snowboards did indeed take to the dunes. Falls were numerous and in the first few days our noses were constantly filled with sand, but it was still fun! We began using a fin to control the side-slipping we encountered, after experimenting with various sizes and numbers of fins we settled on using small aluminum fins on the tail of the board, which also had a deep vee bottom contour. - In 1980 Gary and I were featured in an article in Action Now, an action sports publication. About this time we contracted with Madrid Skateboards to begin manufacturing sand and snowboards under the A-Team label. This was at the very birth of snowboarding, a time when 99% of ski areas would not allow snowboarders on their mountains. We were lucky in that we always had the dunes to play on. Over the next few years Gary and I appeared in numerous magazine articles, surfing movies and even some television commercials. We used to joke that we were the only two professional sandboarders in the world." - Jack Smith | Aide | Sandboarding Adventure, Montana de Oro - Click the link in our bio to check out and book Jack's sandboarding adventure👆🏼
