An abrupt ending to a former railway bridge over the Mitchell River in Bairnsdale Victoria. Formerly a crucial piece of infrastructure on the Orbost railway line; it opened in April 1916 and closed in 1987. During the construction, a temporary wooden bridge was built alongside to allow the construction of permanent concrete piers. The current terminus of the railway line is Bairnsdale Station which is a little over 1km from this bridge although passenger services to Bairnsdale had previously ceased beyond Sale (approx 68km away) in 1993 before being restored in 2004. history historyblogger heritage vintage bridge engineering railway derelict abandoned photography landscape landscapephotography gippsland blogger aussieblogger australia bairnsdale aussiesofinstagram victoria follow instagood instasmile instahistory trainline oldendays ruins river photooftheday instaphotography historylesson

Pictured is the best of numerous Lime Kilns that remain in Walkerville. The lime kilns operated along the Bass Strait coastline from 1875-1926 and at at its peak supported around 80 workers plus their families, some of whom lay to rest in a cemetery in nearby bush land where no one has been buried in over 90 years. The once busy township of Waratah (now Walkerville South) occupied all available nearby land in the late 19th century, however, a road constructed here in 1938 left serious damage to the tops of the kilns, subsequent fires and neglect left the remaining town buildings and infrastructure all but gone, there was also a 350m long jetty that was still actively used until the mines closure, though, all that remains today is a single post on the beach. history heritage kiln limekiln gippsland amazing engineering architecture landscapephotography landscape photography bricks mining victoria australia instaphoto bygoneera getoutside lovewhereyoulive adventure explore beach bassstrait historic historyblogger instalove walkerville vintage stories follow

Built from 1892-1893 during a time of severe economic depression, the Bairnsdale Court House resembles more of a fairytale castle with turrets, extravagant balustrading, steeply pitched roof with dormers, a spire and gorgeous examples of flora and fauna carved into the arch that adorns you upon entry and carved by Albert Smith of Metung, the carvings are unique as Victoria’s first court house to feature such Australiana, the building was an extravagant piece of architecture at the time as it still is today and was designed in a Federation Romanesque style by AJ Macdonald of Victoria’s public works department and was built by Peter Rodger of Williamstown with supervision by Harry French of Bairnsdale on behalf of Mr Macdonald. The Bairnsdale Court House is today recognised by the Victorian Heritage Register for its historical, aesthetic, architectural, and scientific significance to the State of Victoria. It’s also a building which predates the major American Romanesque architecture of Melbourne and Sydney and a rare and highly intact example of the small group of court houses built in Victoria during the 1890s. The Albion Hotel Bairnsdale officially opened by Francis M’Donald in August 1889 to a large number of the leading townspeople following several months of extensive alterations and additions, it was proclaimed as the first three story building in Bairnsdale with Mr M’Donald gloating it was “the place go for anyone who wanted every comfort and accommodation, he could cater to their requirements as well as any man in the town.” Unfortunately though, in 1910 just shy of 21 years after the grand opening, Mr. M’Donald died in his bed following a stomach hemorrhage after just 10 hours of illness leaving behind his widow and two young sons. Despite that, the Albion Hotel continued to operate but not without its controversies, the Albion Hotel was the subject of multiple court appearances for breaches of the liquor license and illegal gaming operations that began during the time Mr M’Donald was the licensee and continued throughout the life of the Albion Hotel. The hotel served RAAF as accommodation in 1942 during WW2 and bizarrely had its balconies removed around the same time before finally closing as a hotel in September of 1986 just three years short of a century. There are numerous tales about the pub and even some claiming it to be haunted. It’s fantastic to see this building still standing prominently to this day with the balconies back intact, though I’m not sure what I think about the retrofitted shop windows on the ground floor. historylesson history historyblogger heritage bairnsdale gippsland mustsee hotel gorgeous victoria australia pub aussie photography interesting journalism explore adventure lovewhereyoulive bewhoyouare getoutside landscape instaphoto architecture building heritagearchitecture instagood instasmile instalove sightseeing

A remarkably good looking section of the South Gippsland Railway passing through Ruby which is located a short distance on the up side of Leongatha. V/line passenger services stopped operating on this line beyond Cranbourne in 1993. Soon after its closure, the South Gippsland Tourist Railway was established and eventually operated tourist trains between Nyora and Leongatha, though unfortunately, the last tourist train to operate on this section of line between Korumburra and Leongatha was in November 2015 with trains between Korumburra and Nyora having ceased earlier in 2013. abandoned history blogger southgippsland victoria australia aussiesofinstagram railway train awesome trainline country love instagood instasmile heritage instadaily picoftheday vintage photography naturephotography instaphoto instatrain photooftheday aussieblogger instagram follow oldendays railroad

The Stony Creek trestle bridge near Nowa Nowa, Victoria was built in 1916 as a part of the railway extension from Bairnsdale to Orbost and operated until the closure of the line in the late 1980's. The bridge is a well-photographed piece of history as any piece of magnificent engineering should be. Rather than me repeating the bulk standard photos, I've made an emphasis toward displaying the current state of decay. Despite this being the largest standing bridge of its kind in the state at 247 meters long and 20 meters high, it is in a severe state of neglect with partial collapse already occurring in some areas despite being recognised as historically significant. 🚂 abandoned derelict fallingapart 1900s bridge history railway trains train trestlebridge engineering construction amazing photography gippsland victoria australia historyblogger blogger aussiesofinstagram mothernature love instabridge railbridge trainphotography nowanowa stonycreek naturephotography trainphotography follow
