I wear my clothes hard: biking, walking my dog, working in my sewing studio, lounging (a lot of lounging), but all of this means that I need clothing that matches my life. I need to be able to sit, walk, bend and work without constriction. I wanted pants that were made for my busy life, but that would keep me warm in the cooler months and still look great. So when it came to pattern drafting this pant, there had to be plenty of space in the hips, thighs and knees to allow for lots of movement and comfort. I knew I wanted a tapered leg, which keeps the chilly fall air out and means less fabric to muck around with. Another design element I knew I wanted was a super high waist: every size features a 15” rise. The elastic waist band is 2” wide, making these pants all the more comfortable. The super high rise of these pants make them the perfect pairing for my cropped shirts. The hem is also cropped to wear with winter boots (Blundstones are my new jam) and a pair of (handmade) socks. The cropped hem also means they look great with a pair of mules. Lastly, inseam pockets. That’s right, this pair of pants has deep inseam pockets for all of your essentials. Made in a dreamy 9oz hemp organic cotton canvas in a color that I’m calling “mushroom.”

One way I’m trying to heal myself with so much collective trauma happening in the world is by setting my intention towards grounding and gratitude. I’m taking a break from the news and letting myself do the things that feel extra good in my body. This means sewing just for me, time with friends and family and giving myself permission to go slower in general. And what a time this is to go slow. I haven’t seen a fall this brilliant since living in the midwest. I’m also feeling grateful today because this little business of mine (of ours) is growing. I just had my most successful quarter yet and my new seamstress started today. What a dream, what a gift. And, yes, the challenges and the self doubt and the imposter syndrome will all be back. But I have to appreciate the feeling of accomplishment while it’s with me. Also, if you’re curious, pictured here is t-shirt 3 and tool belt 1 in canvas. I could deal in canvas t-shirts for the rest of my life. It would be a good life.

Honestly, I don’t really have much to say regarding this image or my clothing or what I’m doing with my business today. I’ve been feeling overwhelmed with the traumatizing things that have happened to the people I know and to the people I don’t know. All women. Feels fitting to simply quote a poem by one of my favorite writers, Nayyirah Waheed: “All the women. In me. Are tired.”

T-shirt 3 in canvas is what I imagined when I first dreamed of creating clothing. I wanted a carefully considered t-shirt (the neckline was perfected through multiple adjustments so that bra straps aren’t exposed) in a thick canvas. I hadn’t seen a canvas t-shirt and when I made a sample, I knew I loved the material with this design. The canvas softens beautifully with time and the cropped hem means it perfectly pairs with high-waisted pants, which is all I wear these days. Available in my shop using the link in my profile.

At my recent events, anytime someone picked up tool belt one and asked about it, I got so excited to talk about it! It’s kind of hard to get the full affect of this piece if you’re not holding it in your hands. Basically it’s a half moon shaped bag you can wear on your waist or hip (or tie the sash and make a cross-body bag? Tie it anywhere you want really!) There are pockets on both sides of the bag. One side holds an iPhone 7, small wallet, keys and lip balm. The other side holds pencils, a moleskin notebook and plenty of other tools you might need (Scissors? Sewing gauge? Tape measurer? Seam ripper? Knitting needles? Square reader?) So you can wear either pocketed side out and THEN you can flip the two pocketed sides in to secure the contents! Riding your bike? No worries, just flip those pockets in! It feels pretty innovative to me and I’m such a huge fan (clearly). Available online using the link in my profile!

Let’s talk pants! I’m in the final stages of work to have my first pant option available. One reason it’s taken me some time is because of the amount of pattern grading I’ve been doing. This pair of pants and all future pairs will be offered in traditional size 0-20, but you all know I won’t be using that system for sizing. 😉 I’ll continue my “open sizing” which is numbered from open size 1 on. Measurements will be provided for each size and there is some flexibility between sizes based on if you want the pant to fit looser or slimmer. Let’s talk design elements. I really wanted to offer something that I feel is so essential in a good pair of hardworking pants...POCKETS. That’s right, this pair of pants will have deep inseam pockets for all of your essentials. Second. I wanted a super high waist. Like, sky high. So every size features a 15” rise. This makes it the perfect pairing for my cropped shirts and just is all around the most comfortable way to wear pants if I’m being honest. Also, the waist band elastic is 2” wide, making these pants all the more comfortable. Third. I wanted these pants to be practical for moving bodies. Specifically, I wanted a tapered pant that you could still move in. So there’s plenty of space in the hips, thighs and knees to move your body, but then the pants come to a neat taper that means less cold gusts chilling your bones. It is fall, after all. Lastly, these pants are cropped. I realized that I love a pant that hits an inch or two above the ankle. Looks great with flats, looks great with a pair of ankle boots. No cuffing required, but it is allowed. And this fabric, guys, I’m so in love. It’s a 9oz hemp organic cotton canvas in a gorgeous color I’m calling “mushroom.” Plays well with “cinder” and “tea,” my names for the two other colors represented in my clothes. I’ve been wearing my sample pair of pant 1 for a few weeks now and I think you guys will love them! Launching Monday! Also pictured here with tool belt 1 and t-shirt 3 in duck canvas, available in my web shop.

After many years of trial and error, I have my outfit formula down: high-waisted pants and a cropped shirt. It's a super comfortable look and I love the silhouette it creates. I also know that I'm totally in love with duck canvas for its amazing structure and sturdiness. This pullover features a dropped sleeve, a finished hem and is more cropped than pullover 1. Just pair with high-waisted pants (rumor has it that an Eli & Barry pair is coming soon!) or your favorite vintage jeans.

It's been a much needed week off after a very busy few months. This past week I've had time to make some clothing for myself, really witness the changing of seasons and hang out with my husband and dog. It's also given me time reflect on these last few months of growth with my business and think about what I want to achieve in the coming months. I'm happy to say that I'll be back at it on Monday (and all current orders are shipping on time 😉). Pictured here is t-shirt 3 and tool belt one in duck canvas.

Making is a spiritual practice for me. For one, it's physical. Much like yoga, pattern drafting, cutting and sewing a garment require a certain an amount of embodiment. A certain amount of presence. It's true, sometimes I forget to take deep breaths while I'm making, but I'm pausing more throughout my days to make sure that my lungs are filled. And much like the embodiment of yoga, making something using this spectacular body that I've been given takes me out of my own headspace. As someone with a busy mind, I've learned that interrupting thought patterns frees me from their grasp. And there's another element to the spiritual practice of clothing making: I get to decide exactly what to put on my body. I'm not subscribing to someone else's views on beauty and on size. These are clothes made for hips and tummies and legs that move and dance and bicycle and walk. These are the clothes that make me feel at home in my body and I hope that they do the same for you.

As happy as I was to end my metal working career, it didn't necessarily mean that I wanted to let go of making jewelry all together. I've been trying to find ways to incorporate my favorite shapes from my past jewelry designs into new materials. I recently learned how to weave which has given me the opportunity to create and offer jewelry again. This necklace features a handwoven pendant with a hand-knit cord. I love it paired with any of my canvas pieces or tunic 1. Available online using the link in my profile.

Tool belt 1 is my answer to the modern day need of a fashionable tool belt. It can be worn in three ways (or more!) One side has compartments for a notebook, pens, scissors, ear buds and whatever else you need to carry on your hip when you're working. The other side has pockets for an iPhone 7, small wallet and a lip balm. Perfect for a day in the studio or while riding your bike on a fall day. Flip both pocketed sides to the inside to conceal and create a bit more security. Bonus points for personalizing your tool belt with pins, patches and embroidery. A true wardrobe work horse. Also worn here with t-shirt 3! Visit the link in my profile to shop.

This weekend's hilarious and baffling interaction at an event? A gentleman walked by my booth and paused in a rack of clothes. He was just staring with a frown on his face so I kindly greeted him. He looked at me, looked at my clothes and said, quite incredulously, "what IS this?" I responded with something like, "uhhh these are clothes." He then asked, "yes, but why such a heavy fabric?" He then shrugged and wished me "the best of luck" and walked away. 😂🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️ A few thoughts on this. If you don't understand something, by all means, ask. But do it with kindness. Do it with an open heart and wonder in your soul because there are so many beautiful things in this world each of us has yet to be see. If you do these things, I will embrace you and tell you my stories and my vision for my clothes and how designing and making clothes is a spiritual practice for me. Walk with kindness. Walk with wonder for this world. If you do these things, I will walk with you.

One thing I've decided as a member of the slow fashion movement is to take care and value the clothing that I already own. This Black Crane dress is over two years old and I bought it to wear to the rehearsal dinner before our wedding. To make it more suitable for everyday wear post-wedding weekend, I had the length and the sleeves altered a bit. Making those little changes can turn something that might only be worn to a special occasion into an everyday wardrobe staple. Also worn with a bag I picked up in San Francisco 3 years ago and Beatrice Valenzuela sandals I invested in this summer.

When I first learned to pattern draft and starting dreaming about offering clothing under my brand, I wanted to make a t-shirt in a sturdy duck canvas. Unfortunately, my doubt got the best of me at that time and I felt like I couldn't offer a shirt in a heavy fabric like canvas, which is most often used for pants or even upholstery. Well, this season, I'm going back to that original vision and offering a new style: t-shirt 3 in duck canvas. T-shirt 3 is more cropped than t-shirt 1 and 2 and has a longer sleeve. It pairs perfectly with your favorite super high-waisted pants and a winter jacket. Sculptural, sturdy and comfortable. Available as one of my new fall offerings that launched earlier this week on eliandbarry.com. Also, I just set up my booth space for Prism's Fashion Collective at @prismworkspaces! The event is tomorrow night from 5-9pm and there are so many amazing vendors popping up with me. Hope to see you Denver folks there!
