Last night consisted of @johnmulaney stand-up at RadioCityMusicHall, followed by a late tapas bar dinner at @boqueria with a round of pisco and a churro sundae topped with whipped cream, sprinkles and sparklers to finish. (No, we weren’t celebrating anyone’s birthday.) Then a good trudge home through the snow-slush to wait out the storm. *All the pre-show, tapas and sparklers now on Stories. NYCeats

If I’m not at a crime scene or (more recently) in the office sorting through documents, you’ll likely find me here, at @magnoliabakery, still sorting through documents. • Fun tangential aside: I just saw these shoes on my current @netflix series, Estocolmo, episode 8. If you haven’t seen the Argentinian drama, it’s worth the watch. If you just want to see the killer heels, I’ve posted some close-ups from the series on Stories.

From earlier this week: a working lunch celebrating 28 years of the lovely Jessica Huseman, who per her own words plans for her biography to one day read in part: “When she's not on her ranch in Texas she's spending time at pass a grille beach in Florida" - or, you know, drinking margs with me at a tequila bar a few blocks from the office. globegirlsreport NYCeats

Sweet palette at @theleopardnyc, where I dined earlier this week. Tucked at a white-clothed table on the upper level, surrounded by soft-colored murals, we sat just close enough to listen in on the other tables, featuring conversations ranging from the great tragedy of one diner’s unfinished memoir to another man’s marked reflection: “If you’d told me back in the ‘80s I’d marry my boyfriend or get a country club membership, I’d have thought the latter was less likely.” His now-husband, seated beside him, noted: “I really like to golf.” nycrestaurantweek NYCeats

“Break free, break bad outside the story’s boundaries.”- John Edgar Wideman. • • • • • I’ve spent much of the past month traveling - Jackson, Mahanoy, Boston - plane rides and road trips, unpacking one suitcase to pack another, time on its own blipped loop - and thinking about transition and travel and all the everyday journeys we take before we ever go anywhere. 30000feet

After a day of meetings, we returned to the bar for one last round before flying back to the city. Recognizing us, the bartender asked if we’d hit deadline. We informed her we had-ish. Taken on our first trip to Boston back in August but thematic of the last 24 hours, spent between the @omniparkerhouse bar and lobby - eking out a first draft. We wrote (and drank) til close, then took our martini shakers out into the lobby and wishing for a stiff cup of coffee, finally back to the hotel room and turned in a draft around 3:30 a.m. The rest of our trip consisted mainly of lobster rolls and meetings with editors. globegirlsreport

I’m now in Boston, but still thinking of last night in New York. We circled the city in three courses, starting at the Hudson with our lobster bisque, continuing with Times Square alongside steak, mash and carrots and ending with the Chrysler Building and a lovely New York Cheesecake. I loved the changing views at the rotating rooftop The View Restaurant in midtown. And The View Fizz - “you’re going to love it” - was true to the waiter’s promise. (More still on Stories.) I’ve passed @theleopardnyc many times in my more than three years on the Upper West Side. Tonight, I ventured inside to try the Southern Italian fare as part of @nycrestaurantweek and was reminded upon entry of a small cavernous din of a restaurant I happened upon once while traveling through the old country - something about the mingling of wined laughter, ironed and affable waitstaff and the candle-heated glow of close and happy tables. The soft-lit and mirrored rooms depicted forest-frolicking nymphs and corners secreted a backbar and stacks of age-backed books with titles hinting mystery, intrigue and murder - the kind a young Jane Austen both loved and laughed at in good measure. The restaurant once belonged to an artist (responsible for the murals) which he painted on wooden panels and on his studio walls - or so the menu said, according to @lablake82 who was punctual to our just after 7 reservation. (I was not so punctual, as in, quite late, and therefore received all such anecdotes secondhand.) The Sicilian-themed dinner began with smoked swordfish carpaccio (not pictured), followed by a sundry orecchiette peppered with capers and olives for me and tuna steak for her. We concluded with a round of deserts - a red wine gelato mousse and sheep ricotta-filled cassata siciliana sponge cake. Rounding the three hour meal: reds and minted cocktails drunk slowly, better to indulge good conversation with equal parts eavesdropping. (The side chatter deserves a whole separate post and filled a @nytimes review back in 2011.) Then a long, cold and winding walk home to reconsider the long withstanding trope of a starving artist and his meal and the true luxury of this treasure tucked away at Central Park West. I really can’t recommend this place highly enough. (More of this special NYCRestaurantWeek meal, including those lovely desserts, now on Stories.) NYCeats SeeYourCity NYCdining NYCeats

Today we got brunch @thedaisynyc on the Upper East Side, seated at a curved corner booth across from two young women who spent the first 20 minutes shooting questionable selfies with their food. At one point they switched places (and plates) to fully optimize the oval mirror behind them. In her new position, one of the women slouched across the railing, speared a hunk of watermelon and held it inches from her mouth while grimacing. (She redid this shot several times to adjust fork, melon and snarl.) After witnessing such a display I had no qualms about standing over the table and directing @kakelly93 to hover over her plate, silverware in hand, without actually taking a bite. (No reshoots were taken in the creation of this image, and our food was still warm when we delved in.) NYCeats

I’ve been thinking a lot about the South and what it means to be Southern outside of it. And I’ve considered the question of where I’m from and what grounds me to those places - yes, places plural - because I believe it’s possible to be from multiple ones. I was born in North Carolina, have family in Mississippi and feel at home in New York. I claim all three. Earlier this week I wrote my first North Carolina-based story (a piece of fiction). This photograph is from that other Carolina (but close enough, right?) snapped on a road trip with one of my best friends several years ago. I can still remember us going over that bridge late at night, windows down, music up, just driving. tbt

From last night in Harrisburg — and then we ordered meatballs and pappardelle. We’re now in Pottsville, where had it not been for several very nice ladies walking down the street with an excellent restaurant recommendation, we very might well have dined at the blue lighted one man at the bar establishment across the street. We did not - but opted for a local pizzeria instead - and have survived for another day of reporting. globegirlsreport

Marking the end of another @nytimes NeediestCases campaign. I’ve been so touched by the many people I’ve met whose stories I’ve had the chance to share in the last few months. From unknown experiences of war to first retellings of sexual abuse, from childhoods in foster care to lifelong struggles with mental illness, from nights passed on rooftops to years spent breaking and rebuilding under addiction, from heartbeat moments of strength and resolve to the enduring struggle of the day to day, and from dreams of a new start in America to dreams of a new and better America - these are just a few of the stories brought to us and then shared with you. The bevy of photographers - @jbrightphoto, @amr.alfiky, @michaelnoblejr, @cinthyasantosb, @michelleagins, @maslovsaslov, @laylahb, @edu_bayer, @elias.williams, @harrisonhill, @hellobunni, @luizcribeiro, @tesslomayer, @andrea_mohin and @yanapaskova - have put into relief portraits of textured nuance and shadowed light. And @ceciliabohan1’s attention and passion to each and every image, stitched visual narratives that at times carried and always raised the integrity of the whole. I feel so honored to have once again taken part in a project that strives to account for the extraordinary in the every day and to push beyond common trope to empathetic understanding. You won’t see *many* stories from me in the coming months. I’ve been working on a very exciting project the last few years - the reason for my lengthy stay in MS - which finally concludes this spring. So I’ll be taking a brief pause from profiles and crime scenes ... but more on that later. Until then Xx. nytassignment
