Someone recently gave my daughter a book of children's haikus, narrated from the perspective of a wise Panda. It's titled (appropriately) "Hi, Koo!" and it is one of the most endearing picture books on our overloaded shelves. My daughter insists on reading it almost every night. And the more I read it, the more I start to see these beautiful little haikus pop up in other parts of my life. Just today, I was preparing a proof for a client of this design (Endless Circle Winter), when one of my favorites came to me: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ shadows getting Long snowfall flutters around the outside lamps. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Poetry and art are just two sides of the same coin, aren't they?

Of all the amazing cities in this country, Chicago will always hold a special place in my heart. It's the city where I grew into an adult, where I fell in love, and where (on a beautiful June evening on our rooftop deck) I got engaged to my now husband. Chicago was the very first city in my Cityscapes ketubah collection, and will always be my favorite.

A bit of a long post...It's hard to believe that we're just days away from 2018. The end of the year is always a reflective time for me, and often bittersweet. I always look back at the last 12 months and wonder, was I /enough/ this year? Every January I say to myself, this is the year I'm going to be a perfect mom, a kick-ass business woman, and an inspired artist! All three - every day! I'm going to accomplish all my goals, drink all the green smoothies, cross things off my bucket list at a furious pace, and somehow still get 8 hours of sleep a night! It's hard to not set yourself up for disappointment come December when that's the plan you lay out for yourself in January. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Not to say that 2017 wasn't a heck of a year. In fact, there's much to be proud of. It was Ink with Intent's best year yet. I made some progress toward a life-long dream of illustrating a children's book. And I shepherded my daughter from curious baby to adorably busy toddler (in relatively one piece). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ All this to say, if you're like me, and tend to be overly critical of yourself, I hope this New Years brings you peace and a well-deserved sense of accomplishment. As the maxim goes, you can't be all the things all the time to all the people. But you can take small steps each day towards your dreams. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So thank you to my clients for making 2017 my most professionally-fulfilling year yet, and thank you to my friends and family for lifting me up as a parent and a dreamer. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And may 2018 bring all of us a renewed sense of purpose and joy. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ [Image: Custom Ketubah of the moon setting over Chicago / Lake Michigan]

Very few people know this, but the "Full Moon at Sea" ketubah was actually the very first one that I ever illustrated for my shop Ink with Intent. Needless to say, it's always held a very special place in my heart. :)

Here in Vermont these days, it's completely dark by 4:30pm. Some people find the never-ending darkness of winter exhausting...but I don't know. I find it kind of...magical. Maybe that's why so many of my designs feature dark, moody skies. There's a quietness, a sweetness, a coziness to the darkness, don't you think? This is the "Birch Trees - Autumn" ketubah, which features a hidden message in the leaves. Can you find it?

Annie and Michael just sent me some incredible photos of their big day that I'll be sharing on my blog soon! Spoiler - their wedding included a stunning emerald green gown and a surprise flash mob. It was such a joy to work with them last spring on a custom wedding certificate featuring the famous cherry blossoms in Washington DC.

No matter how old I get, secret messages always have a certain magic to them. Growing up, my best friend and I would spend days developing our own languages and codes so that we could write 'un-crackable' letters to one another. We even created a secret mailbox between our two houses where we could stash these notes undetected. Maybe I was channeling my inner secret-message-loving child when I started sketching the "Tree of Life - I am my beloved's" Ketubah. If you look closely, you'll find a hidden blessing in the branches. Ani L'dodi V'dodi Li :)

Do you know what I find most magical about weddings? It's the joining of not just two individuals, but often times two whole cultures and histories. Some of the favorite custom ketubahs I've worked on have been for multi-cultural wedding celebrations. It's so powerful to take an ancient Jewish tradition and let it expand. This was a custom design I created that incorporates not just the Hebrew and English for "I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine," but also the same phrase in Farsi. It was such a joy to work with you, Jillian and Sara!

Isn't it funny how random events in your life can set off a chain reaction that affects you years later? One of my best friends got married in Stowe, Vermont in the summer of 2014. When we traveled out here for her wedding, I remember looking around at the stunning Green Mountains while sipping Trapp Family Lodge ale with my husband, and saying to each other that we could totally picture living here one day. Well, despite have no connection to this area, two years later we packed up our lives and headed to Vermont where we've now been living for over a year. I couldn't love this place more. Life is funny like that! This is a picture of the wedding certificate I gifted my friend for that fateful wedding three years ago.

“Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs. I am haunted by waters.” ― Norman Maclean, A River Runs Through It and Other Stories Pic of the Paint Burst - River ketubah, new in the shop this year. Also available as a wedding certificate.

As a couple, are you measured, calm and deliberate, or wild, chaotic, and spontaneous? If the latter, my new design "Good Earth Burst," might feel just right to you. As a methodical person myself, this design took me a little out of my comfort zone. But it's been fascinating to see what types of couples are drawn to it.

Intertwining trees is such a powerful symbol of love and marriage. Maybe that's why I keep coming back to it as a motif in my wedding illustration work. And while nearly every ketubah artist in the past 30 years has created an intertwining trees ketubah design, the symbolism never stops feeling fresh...and relevant...to today's couples. What do you think?

Jewish weddings include some of the most wonderful traditions, don't they? I never really stopped to think about it until recently. Now I live in a city where most people have never attended a Jewish wedding before meeting me. So a simple question about what I do for a living often turns into a long explanation of ketubot, the horah, smashing the glass, and all the other incredible parts of Jewish wedding tradition. It's made me appreciate how unique, timeless and beautiful these rituals really are.

It's a gray, gray day here in Vermont, so I needed to look at some summery trees. This is the "Birch Trees - Summer" ketubah (also available as a wedding certificate). My favorite part about it is the secret Hebrew phrase hiding in the leaves. It translates to "I have found the one in whom my soul delights."

I find tiny house portraits so charming. Here's a custom ketubah featuring a little portrait of Tower House in Martha's Vinyard where Emily and Josh married last month. Another favorite part of this ketubah was the "Ani L'Dodi..." (I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine) hidden in the botanical wreath. It was so wonderful to work with you guys!

Another design from my brand new "Etched in Stone" collection of ketubahs and wedding certificates. It's an incredibly minimalist design (especially by ketubah art standards). I love how the design seems to be enveloping the text in an airy, marble hug. It also comes in a darker version with a different texture. As you can probably tell, I'm all about marble right now!

With soft colors and crisp geometric patterns, these designs represent both the tenderness and gravity inherent in marriage. Very excited to have launched this brand new collection! I’m excited to announce the launch of a brand new line of ketubahs and wedding certificates call the "Etched in Stone" series. The idea for this line first emerged sometime last spring. During the madness of the spring wedding rush, I found myself craving extreme minimalism – clean lines, limited colors, a cool contemporary feel. In other words, something very different from what I typically illustrate. [The Marble Waves - Amethyst Wedding Certificate from the new Etched in Stone collection]

Now that my busy season is finally over, I'm going through all the ideas I've had over the last year to figure out what to illustrate next. It’s a strange process, going through 8 months worth of “ooo-how-abouts” and “hmmm-what-ifs” and figuring out which ideas might actually have legs. After all, a little time tends to reveal a lot about an idea. Some ideas that I couldn’t wait to draw back in April now feel a little…flat? Others that were only the haziest of thoughts last February have now coalesced into a solid vision. But October is the time when, with a clear mind, I finally get to riffle through all these half-baked plans and pursue the ones that speak loudest. As a ketubah and wedding certificate artist, October is my favorite month of the year. And not just because I can finally take a deep breath after the insanity of summer’s wedding season (though that’s nice too). It’s because I finally have the bandwidth to dig out all the ideas I set aside, all the doodles I stashed in drawers, and all the vague notions I jotted down on scratch paper over the previous year.
