When working with a woman artisans you are not only working with her but with her whole family. ⠀ •⠀ We make it a point to meet the children of the families we work with. We want them to see our interest and our love for their art. Many live in the reserves and have a small bedroom rented in the city center for the children to be able to attend school. ⠀ •⠀ They start life with two life perspectives, understanding the values of the reserves and the unknown of the outside world. “Age has no reality except in the physical world. The essence of a human being is resistant to the passage of time. Our inner lives are eternal, which is to say that our spirits remain as youthful and vigorous as when we were in full bloom. South America is full of mystery, legends and mythical stories – nowhere is this more true than in Colombia. Know about el "El Dorado”? Legend of a ruler covered with gold dust, known for throwing precious jewels into the lake to appease a god that lived underwater. ⠀ •⠀ When Spaniards came to the land in search of gold, many heard of the legend and made their way to Lake Guatavita and tried to drain it in 1545. They lowered its level enough to find hundreds of pieces of gold along the lake's edge. But the presumed treasure in the deeper water was beyond their reach.⠀ •⠀ Lake Guatavita is in the Colombian Andes and is now a focus of ecotourism. We think that the legend still exists and the gold is found within the magic of these mountains. Would you agree?

The initial idea was driven by my personal relationship with Colombia. A culture, a country and a place that often pulled me in at the most unusual moments of my life. Colombia is cheerful and intense. It is a mix of feelings. All its many stories and their accompanying intriguing images of its people shines strong. I sought to spotlight age old craftsmanship of our native people. Traditions that are, sadly, being forgotten and women artisans striving to keep them alive. Celebrate art that is rooted in culture and optimism linkinbio.

🔊♥️Colombia is full of magic and mystery. Most of these tales are passed from generation to generation. Here is our fav legend: The Chimidyue’s tale, “The Wings of the Butterfly”, from the Tukuna tribe of South America. The tale of Chimidyue itself is one of a genre of forest odyssey & a unique female protagonist. Story below 🙌🏽☀️🙌🏽⠀ ๑⠀ On the banks of the Amazon River, in a clearing in the forest, there once lived a girl named Chimidyue. Like the other girls, Chimidyue never stepped far into the forest. Still, she would listen wide-eyed when the elders told stories about that other world. She would go gazing among the giant trees and wondering what she might find farther on. ⠀ ๑⠀ On an early morning, Chimidyue was making a basket, she looked up and saw a big morpho butterfly hovering right before her. “You are the most magical creature in the world,” Chimidyue said dreamily. “I wish I could be like you.” Following the moment, she quickly falls into an adventure within the jungle, she is lost and afraid. Yet, Chimidyue meets a spider monkey, a jaguar and a bird, to later learn “nothing among the trees is what it seems. Everything changes into something else!”⠀ ๑⠀ The butterfly gently, said “that is the way of the forest. Among your own people, things change slowly and are mostly what they seem. But your human world is a tiny one. All around it lies a much larger world, and you can’t expect it to behave the same.”⠀ ๑⠀ ♡♡♡Inspired by the spirit of the forest? Double tap and let us know to bring you more of these stories.

We wanted to change that and sought to work with talented artisans located in Pueblo Rico.⠀ •⠀ The Embera chami create something as individual as the wearer. The beadwork and the steps to source the raw material until final production is a richly complex process. •⠀ Our goal is to revive traditions and provide artisans with a steady income. Many people ask us where our artisans are based. Check out this map of Colombia, we work in Risaralda and Valle del Cauca. In el Dovio, we work with about 25 women artisans. In Risaralda, the community is made up of both men and women, with a total of 12 makers. We decided on these locations with the data provided by the La Defensoría del Pueblo, a national organization working with displaced populations of Colombia. ⠀⠀ • •⠀⠀⠀ •⠀⠀⠀ 🇨🇴 Mucha gente nos pregunta dónde se basan nuestros artesanos. Dovio is a small town based in the Department of Valle del Cauca, Colombia. On our first visit, we met with Maria, a human rights lawyer that has more than 30+ years working on the field with the Embera Chami people. ⠀ •⠀ Many in the village respect and trust her judgement. She explained how our artisans start their day by beading then collecting fire wood and end the day by doing manual labor on the land. ⠀ •⠀ The men know how to bead and together they combine their handmade crafts to sell at the city market. The family selects one of the male members of the community to go on the trip. The costs of the trip to the city is expensive and many of their pieces have to be sold at a much lower price. ⠀ •⠀ They fear getting back to the village without any money and prefer to make the bare minimal, so they don't have to stay overnight. ⠀ •⠀ Our model is based on working with these artisans on their land and valuing their goods on fair trade prices. The way it needs to be.
