So ... this happened! Orca in New Zealand! 😱😱 I was at the official reopening of the marina in Kaikoura, exactly one year to the day after the earthquake, when a pod of killer whales was spotted off the coast. Luckily for us we were able to jump on board with Whale Watch Kaikoura for a personal encounter. This is only my second time seeing orca in the wild and I never expected to see them so close to home. @KaikouraNZ

Good morning everyone! I was trying to shoot a landscape shot that actually shows how unique it is to see snow capped mountains against the ocean and it’s hard to do from land. Haha. But yeah, that’s what you’ll see in Kaikoura New Zealand. 🗻🌊🐋 @KaikouraNZ

I’m not sure how many people know this but the MAIN thing that makes Kaikoura so unique is the Kaikoura Canyon just off shore, so deep that it attracts many deep water species that in turn attract WHALES! The Kaikoura Canyon is a part of the Hikurangi Trench and is just 500 meters off the coast and up to 1.2 km deep! Imagine a drop off in the ocean that is so sudden and so deep? It’s like having the deepest parts of the ocean at your doorstep! Because of this underwater canyon system Kaikoura attracts SO. MANY. ANIMALS! And that includes this Sperm Whale, shot from a light plane with ‘Wings Over Whales.’ Sperm whales are the largest of the toothed whales in the world and very rare and special to see. As they feed in really deep water you have to be patient to see them on the surface breathing, which they do for roughly 10 minutes before taking a massive dive back down. 🐋😱 @KaikouraNZ

If you want snow capped mountains, Norfolk pines and glorious ocean all in the one place then you’ve got it in Kaikoura! 😱😱 This was my second sunset and it so did not disappoint. I’m currently staying at the White Morph, which is on the waterfront, and these views were a short walk across the road. The guys and I bided our time before sunset by playing the ‘rock game’ and then this happened resulting in much chaos! Oh, you don’t know what the rock game is? Guess you’ll have to come for a sunset with me one day to find out. 😂😂 @KaikouraNZ 🔥🔥

And now, Kaikoura! 😱😱 For those that missed my story I am now in Kaikoura New Zealand for a very special week that remembers the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck in November last year. This has been a trialing time for the locals of Kaikoura but there’s a lot of hope on the horizon with the reopening of the jetty tomorrow and a date set for the northbound highway to reopen too. It’s too big a statement to say that it’s business as usual in Kaikoura but I can officially say that Summer 2017 is open! If you’re traveling to New Zealand I would encourage you to support this incredible destination. These are yellow lupines (unfortunately weeds, but pretty ones) shot at the beach near Hapuku Lodge where I stayed my first two nights. 💛💛💛 @KaikouraNZ

I wanted to share something really beautiful with you, and maybe an awesome Christmas idea. It’s a photo book! Now I’ve had some pretty bad photo books in my time and I wasn’t ready to commit to spreading the word for these guys unless I had a physical copy in my hands and I was happy with it. Momento delivered massively! From the packaging to the unveiling and the incredible quality I fell in love with my book immediately. Even my mum wants to borrow it to take it on her work rounds. Haha. I am legit obsessed with it. Now, this is a sponsored post and I am being paid for it BUT the post was on the proviso that I love the product and I love it so much that I’ve put the link in my profile to their site and I’m going to add some shots of the book to my story, both extras that I am not obliged to do. So if you do want to print something really special and beautiful I would recommend them 100%. It’s @momentophotobooks 📒❤️😍📷

THIS! 🙌🏻🙌🏻 This is the Quiraing, even the name sounds mysterious and wonderful. The Quiraing is a landslip in Isle of Skye on the Trotternish Ridge and I found it after someone told me to find “the road that runs through the middle of Isle of Skye that isn’t well signed”. With those super clear directions I did some sleuthing and found it! There’s a nearly 7km hike through high cliffs, plateaus and pinnacles and I actually did it. It was quite the saga due to plenty of intermittent rain, winds and a slippery death track down. 😂😂 It was also one of the best things I’ve ever done in my life and gave me an amazing sense of accomplishment.

I’ve actually had a break, a real break. But today it’s back at the desk and time to start planning the rest of this years adventures. This is the best rainbow I’ve ever seen, pictured from the path of the Fairy Pools in Isle of Skye. Isle of Skye is disputably one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been with dynamic light, great hikes and stunning landscapes.

Maybe I just get excited too easily but I thought this was really cool and I hoped some of the solar cars got to see it too. Incidentally the train tracks you can see in the background are from the Ghan, which I still haven’t done but would love to. This is what some of the trippy landscapes around Coober Pedy look like, this spot is called the Breakaways! The World Solar Challenge had a check point in town and it was such an interesting area to check out. Coober Pedy is known as the opal capital of the world and has such a weird and wacky township with loads of shops and even hotels located underground. I took heaps of other shots in this spot but this one really shows how vast and desolate it is. @World_Solar_Challenge BWSC17 Sp

I don’t know who else has been waiting for this moment but South Australia definitely has ... we finally crossed over the border with the World Solar Challenge. Haha. The first thing I did was find a camp and shoot one of the vehicles before it set off for the day. The cars stop at bang on 5:00 PM every day and camp on the side of the road until 8:00 AM the next day. Overnight there’s not a huge amount of time to rest as the car needs to be checked and made ready for the next day. The landscapes in South Australia are so different to the landscapes in the Northern Territory and the temperatures are different too. I saw a lot of barren desert and heaps of wild emu’s. I also noticed a lot of the highway in South Australia is red, I wonder why? @World_Solar_Challenge BWSC17 Sp

Soooo, I did it again. I went to the Kangaroo Sanctuary in Alice Springs when I passed through with the World Solar Challenge. It was actually something a few members of the teams got to do as Alice had an event checkpoint and it was a cloudy day, which slowed the cars down. In case you’ve been hiding under a rock the Kangaroo Sanctuary is world famous (I’ll tag them in to the post) and a wonderful way to spend an afternoon. Everyone gets a cuddle of a baby kangaroo and if you’re lucky you might also see Roger, the world’s most famous kangaroo. This was after the Solar Challenge had finished for the day so we drove back to Tennant Creek and made a note of where all the camps were so I could plan my shoot the next day. @World_Solar_Challenge BWSC17 Sp

Omg, I’ve been so excited to share this photo! When I was originally approached to shoot the World Solar Challenge I was reluctant to commit as I wasn’t sure I could creatively shoot solar powered cars and whether the aesthetic would work on my feed. From that initial conversation the client basically gave me full creative control and told me I didn’t even have to shoot the cars, I could shoot anything I wanted on the route and just create awareness of the event and how cool it is. BEST. JOB. EVER. From there I actually did find a composition that I love that I think combines the alien landscape of the Devil’s Marbles with the alien look of the solar powered vehicles for a cool shot. I hope you like it too. 😍❤️🚗☀️🌞 @World_Solar_Challenge BWSC17 Sp

Good morning! After our adventures in Katherine and Mataranka the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge continued south through Tennant Creek and down towards Karlu Karlu, the Devil’s Marbles. I had been looking forward to this section of road as I knew I could get an awesome composition of the alien looking landscape with an alien looking vehicle. But before that I had both a sunset and a sunrise in the National Park, a place I could literally shoot at for days. Does anyone remember my stories from my last visit here? What lies beneath? These are the Mataranka Thermal Springs and I was so excited to see Mataranka on the route of the World Solar Challenge for this reason. Last time I was in the area I didn’t have an underwater housing and this time I did! The Mataranka Springs and Bitter Springs are about 10km apart and quite different. You can see in this shot that there is some infrastructure built around the Mataranka Springs with sides constructed and plenty of stairs into the water. This was day one of the Challenge. The solar cars left Darwin at 8:00 AM and most would have passed Mataranka without time to stop as they drive until 5PM every day. We shot straight down to Mataranka so I could shoot at midday when the light is above and you can see the clarity of the water. 💙💙💙 @World_Solar_Challenge BWSC17 Sp

Good morning! A lot of you probably already know this but whenever I travel my travel companion inevitably becomes my model. I have a long running tradition of this and the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge is no exception. Diving into the crystal clear waters of Bitter Springs is driver Nick, one of an army of volunteers that make the trek from Darwin to Adelaide with the Challenge. Nick was originally to be an observer in the race, joining different teams for stints to watch and observe their practice. We both agree that he got a much better deal when he was lumped with me. 😂😂 Bitter Springs can be found in Mataranka, 3 km off the route and about 5 hours south of Darwin. @World_Solar_Challenge BWSC17 Sp

The stunning Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge! Although the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge passes through Katherine it actually doesn’t go past the gorge, which is about 30km down the road. Since the cars are on the road from 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM I had ample time to backtrack after that to catch a sunset from my favorite lookout, Baruwei. At the moment the fruit bats are in town and it’s a spectacular site to watch them swooping down for a drink on dusk, in their tens of thousands! (If you’re lucky you might even catch the crocs waiting with their mouths open.🐊🦇) Since the teams that are competing in the race don’t have much time to see the sites I’m hoping my photos will find them. 📷🌞🚗 @World_Solar_Challenge BWSC17 Sp

Good morning from somewhere in the middle of the Northern Territory as I continue to make my way south alongside the incredible solar powered cars competing in the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge. There are so many photographers working this event; Getty photographers, media crew, team photographers, social media photographers and me! My job is really different to everyone else though, I’m shooting the destination more so than the race and showcasing tourism along the route. They’ll be pics and videos of the cars on my Insta-story if you’re interested because they are SO COOL! Every time we come by one I’m giggling like a crazy person. The Challenger cars are the craziest because they are built solely to compete the fastest. The design of the vehicle and conditions for the driver are insane. New adventure time! This week I am doing something completely different and random, the World Solar Challenge! 😳 I’ve been surprised that hardly anyone in Australia seems to have heard of it but it’s been running for 30 years. Basically it’s a challenge to drive 3,000 kilometers through the centre of Australia (Darwin - Adelaide) using solar powered cars. Teams from around the world submit vehicles in three categories (Challenger, Cruiser and Adventure) and make the journey powered by the energy of the sun! Don’t worry though, I’m not about to flood your feed with shots of UFO looking cars, I’m along for the ride to capture the destination and the journey and to create awareness of this really cool event. (Although I hope I can get some cool shots of the cars too) I’ve got the website for the event in my bio if anyone is interested in reading more about it. The technology used in these vehicles is technology that will be adapted into consumer vehicles in the future, I think that’s really cool. @World_Solar_Challenge BWSC17 Sp

Omg! You guys, they’re glowworms! So, apart from Hobbiton, the other major tourist attraction in this region is the amazing network of caves in Waikato and the slew of cave-related activities. Before I went I only knew that I wanted to see glow worms but now I need to go back and do the tubing experience, canyoning and all the other things! The cave that I visited was Ruakuri cave and I went in with the ‘Legendary Black Water Rafting Co’ and legendary guide Logan. Although Ruakuri is not known as ‘the’ glow worm cave there were loads and loads of them as well as very cool chambers and cave stuff. Glow worms are definitely in the category of subjects that I think look amazing to your eyes but are difficult to translate to an image so basically imagine this but a hundred times cooler. Lol. (Although I found loads of other cool stuff too) I shot this image on the evening banquet tour and learned so much about this film set that was used for both Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit. For example, nearly 50% of people that visit Hobbiton don’t know what it is with some believing it to be a traditional New Zealand village. 😂😂 I’m such a LOTR geek that I also got myself a ‘One Ring’ ring and when I posted it on my story everyone thought I was engaged. 🙊💍😂 Anyway, thank you @hamiltonwaikato for tee’ing this up and for being so darn pretty. 🙌🏻😍❤️ HamiltonWaikato
